ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - An old factory building in Southeast Roanoke is one step closer to having a new purpose.

The Roanoke Planning Commission voted this afternoon to approve rezoning the property.

Developers wanted the land rezoned so they can turn the building into a mixed-use apartment building.

The American Viscose plant at one time was the largest rayon textile mill in the world.

"Well I think it is a great use of the property, that's a huge property over there, there is lots of activity," said Planning Commission Chair James Smith.

"There's just a rebirth in that area. I think I would like to see some other people do the same thing."

The Roanoke City Council will have the final vote on whether the land will be rezoned.
