Roanoke Police unveil new car in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Roanoke City Police Department's newest police cruiser is dedicated to the community's kids.

The car has new decals showing off the department's relationship with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia. It specifically names the Bigs in Blue program, which pairs officers with children in the community for mentorship opportunities.

Thursday officers parked the car outside of one of the Big Brothers Big Sisters neighborhood centers and let a few children play inside the car.

Chief Time Jones said Roanoke is the first department in the nation to bear the new Bigs in Blue logo. He said six of his officers are mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters and said he sees the positive impact it can make for the mentor and the mentee.

"So they spend some time with each of those youth's life and help them with homework, take them to events, become part of their life so they can see police officers from a little different perspective," he said.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for mentors. Anyone interested can contact the agency to be paired with a child.
