Roanoke has received the All-America City Award not once, but seven times.

Today the city celebrated the latest honor.

No other community has earned the award as many times, and City Council recognized the team that brought it home.

The National Civic League honored Roanoke for its efforts to help young children improve their reading skills and success in school.

Sheila Umberger is the Director of Roanoke Public Libraries.

"What I've seen is a shift in the city from a community that cares about children and cares about literacy," Umberger said, "to a community that believes we all have a role in that."

The work continues.

]An event this Friday at the Melrose Branch Library will put free books in the hands of children who live in Roanoke's public housing communities.
