Roanoke friends remember Alexa Cannon
Alexa Cannon grew up in Roanoke. She was a 2016 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, and was popular among her classmates.
She was a volleyball player, who loved photography.
On Friday, a high school friend described her as "a very sweet person with an uplifting smile."
Helen Fitzpatrick lived next door to the Cannon family when Alexa was born, and they developed a close friendship that endured.
"I saw her last Sunday and she told me she was leaving for school the next day," Fitzpatrick told WDBJ7, "and she was excited about it and looking forward to it. So this has just been unbelievable to all of us who loved her."
Fitzpatrick said she will remember how Alexa overcame serious health problems that affected her as a child, and again as a young adult.
"She went back and graduated from Patrick Henry. She was very popular with the students over there. She loved being there," Fitzpatrick said. "And then she called me one day and said I'm going to go to Radford University. I'm going to go up there to school. Well I was thrilled to death. I thought that really took a lot of courage and bravery to do that. She was a very brave young person."
