ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) In Roanoke, a week-long series of events will bring together people with diverse backgrounds.
Roanoke leaders gathered Friday morning at the City Market Building to kick off Welcoming Week.
Between now and next Saturday, more than a dozen events are scheduled, all designed to build bridges between immigrants and other residents of the Roanoke Valley.
"We are Roanoke, united in our efforts to build a stronger community," said Mayor Sherman Lea, "by recognizing the contribution that we all make to create a vibrant culture and a growing economy.
Welcoming week is a national event, with more than 400 communities taking part last year.
