Roanoke restaurant patrons watch as fight escalates into shooting

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - Three people were sent to the hospital Wednesday after a fight in a restaurant parking lot turned into a shooting. Several people were eating inside, including a woman with a baby. It happened outside of Bob and Cheryl's Restaurant in the 3500 block of Shenandoah Avenue around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Another witness, Doug Shaffner, said one of the three injured men actually ran into the restaurant saying he'd been shot. It was a scary situation for everyone involved.

"There's been a lot of things going on in this neighborhood lately," Shaffner said. "A lot of shootings and things."

Shaffner said he has lunch here at Bob and Cheryl's on Shenandoah Avenue just about every day.

"Everybody knows everybody, just about," he said. "It's kind of a family thing."

But he says Wednesday's lunch was interrupted by a yelling match about parking. Another patron was fighting with a man, before that man left and returned with backup; two more men. Shaffner said that turned into a fist fight and then guns were drawn.

"I was taking cover, my wife had already ran back to the bathroom with the other two ladies and the baby. They were all cowering in the back when he ran back there and then the rest of them just took off in the car. But the injured man that got shot in the back we sat him down in that booth right there. He said, 'I'm hit, I'm hit bad.' And he was gushing blood out of his back."

He said someone called 9-1-1. The three other men disappeared.
Shaffner is thankful no one else was hurt, and plans to be back for breakfast tomorrow.

"It's kinda scary. I mean after the fact, you're panicking and then afterwards you think about what could have happened."

No one else was injured. A church operating in the plaza had a window shot out.
