Roanoke's Cornerstone prepares for last weekend

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) New Year's Eve always brings big crowds to Roanoke's Cornerstone Bar & Grill, but this will be a special event because it's also their last.

"We will have more food and more alcohol. We expect a big crowd especially being Sunday night. It'll be great," owner Mike Flannery said.

Cornerstone is closing. After more than 16 years on the corner of Wall Street and Campbell Avenue, the building's owners notified Flannery in October that the month-to-month lease would end Dec 31.

"It's not our choice," Flannery said. "We did not want to leave this location."

The bar has lived up to their name. It's become a cornerstone of Roanoke's downtown nightlife over the years.

"There have been a lot of regulars coming by to see us. We're looking forward to seeing all of our old friends from the last 16 1/2 years," Flannery said.

As they stock up for one last party, there is a bittersweet taste for restaurant staff.

"We're going to relish the next three days and go from there," Flannery said.

Flannery didn't say if he had plans to relocate, but customers hope for a new chapter in the new year.
