ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- In Rockbridge County, middle schoolers have started a program to raise money by reading.

All of Maury River Middle School gathered this morning to hear presentations on Read to Feed, where the students raise money for Heifer International by getting sponsors for every book they read in coming weeks.

“Working through Heifer helps our kids gain some global awareness, recognize there are many who are far less fortunate than they are," Susan Petriella, an eighth grade English teacher who organized the event said. "And they help to solve a world problem by reading.”

This is the second year for the program in the school. The plan is for the students to read two-thousand books.
