BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) In Blacksburg a program that guarantees members of the Virginia Tech community gets home safely is growing.

This Safe Ride van was just added to the Virginia Tech Police Department's fleet.

Previously the department loaned cars from campus for the program.

Safe Ride has been around for a while but its demand and the projected growth for Virginia Tech gave the department a reason to expand the service.

"It's been a very successful program. We average between 2,300 and 2,500 riders per year and so the students, staff, and faculty really seem to appreciate that type of service and we're happy to do it," said Chief Kevin Foust with the campus police department.

The program was created to keep Hokies from walking alone. A free ride is available any time during the year.
