Officials from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office have confirmed that the death of an 18-year-old Liberty High student was the result of an accidental shooting.

The sheriff's office confirmed that the gunshot wound to Nicholas Bernard's head was an accident on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred Jan. 8, and Bernard was transferred to the Roanoke Memorial Hospital by helicopter where he later died.

Bedford County Public Schools expressed their sorrow over the student's death in a statement saying, "It is with tremendous sorrow that we confirm the recent death of Nick Bernard, Liberty High School Senior.
