The Amherst County Sheriff's Office says 83-year-old John Austin of Madison Heights was found dead in his home.

His son, 47-year-old Chris Austin, also in the home, was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The Sheriff's Office says the call came in after 3 p.m. Sheriff E.W. Viar said a neighbor heard gunshots in the 100 block of Riverview Road and called for help. Deputies found John Austin dead.

He said deputies had never been called to the address before this incident, and said the incident was shocking to him and the community.

"I know these families. I know all the people involved and it is just very sad," said Viar.

Chris Austin was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held without bond. All search warrants connected to the case are sealed.
