ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) In Roanoke, there's new life for one part of Melrose Avenue that's been a source of gun violence.
The property used to be Ms. Choc's lounge, the site of a shooting last June when four people were hurt.
After it shut down, Roanoke Police Captain Rick Morrison approached Feeding America Southwest Virginia about turning it into a community center.
Thursday night, those plans were shown to the neighborhood.
"But the focus is not on Feeding America, the focus is not on the police," Morrison said. "It's what it's going to do for this community. Bringing jobs in, support healthy nutritious meals for children and families. We don't have any access to that right now."
The center will provide hundreds of meals and snacks each day and offer job training including in the culinary arts.
