BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A historic area of Blacksburg is expanding in hopes of attracting more people to it.

The Smithfield Plantation near Virginia Tech just opened the expansion of its 6-year-old Pavilion.

The area now has bathrooms, a bridal changing room, and a catering kitchen making it easier for event guests to enjoy themselves.

Chairman of the Board for the Smithfield-Preston Foundation William G. Foster, Jr. said the expansion was all about bringing in more events and more people to their historic area.

"The expansion is not so much the commercial aspect of it," he explained. "The expansion is to reinvigorate that social setting that has followed it's history from its construction in 1774."
