Southern Air in Lynchburg recognized for promoting apprenticeship

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) In Lynchburg, a business is in the national spotlight for training skilled workers.

Southern Air received first place in a National Center for Construction, Education & Research video contest promoting apprenticeship. It's meant to be used as a model for other companies to learn from.

Apprenticeship programs like this one are gaining popularity with an increased need for skilled workers.

"We are seeing our population begin to age toward retirement age and it's clear to us if we want to maintain the future of this company, we have to train the next generation," said Paul Denham, President of Southern Air.

Southern Air's program is free and they currently have 73 students. They have multiple job openings right now that need to be filled.
