State Open of Virginia kicks off with youth clinic, donation

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) -- The kids got in on the action at Ballyhack Golf Club on Wednesday before the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia kicked off.

Around 75 kids from the Roanoke area took part in the youth clinic, featuring instructors like Virginia Tech's Amanda Hollandsworth and Mark Lawrence.

Delta Dental also donated $17,000 to the First Tee of Roanoke Valley to benefit youth development programming in the region.

"Our youth continue to benefit from the support this tournament provides and the developmental programming it funds,” said Jennifer Blackwood, Executive Director of The First Tee of Roanoke Valley, in a news release. “[Wednesday's] clinic is a fun opportunity for local kids to hear from real golf professionals about how to play the game and what golf has meant to them, their educations and their careers."
