Victim in fatal Franklin County crash identified; state police searching for driver

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) - Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Franklin County that happened around 7 p.m. January 26 near Route 670.

The driver of a Jeep Cherokee was traveling on Route 834 when it ran off the road and struck a tree. A passenger - 20-year-old Yancy Caleb Velazquez - was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep left the scene and has not been located or identified. Several other passengers were in the Jeep at the time of the crash and have been questioned about the driver's identity, according to state police.

Troopers continue to follow up on leads to identify the driver.

The crash happened near the intersection of Brooks Mill Road and Burnt Chimney Road Sunday night, Franklin County Dispatch said.

No other information has been released.
