BOTETOURT CO., Va. (WDBJ7) Donald Davis had the students' undivided attention as the Sounds of the Mountains Music and Story Festival opened Friday morning.

But it was a talk he delivered in 2014 at Tedx Charlottesville that brought him to the attention of UVA Men's Basketball Coach Tony Bennett.

"I did this TED talk, actually four years ago, about my father and an accident that happened to him when he was small and how he overcame that," Davis told WDBJ7, "a thing that crippled his leg and could have ruined his life."

Bennett shared the video with his players as they dealt with last year's loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

"It was powerful," Bennett told reporters following a tournament victory this year." It was a unique TED talk that really spoke to the situation at hand. And there's so many things that guys take from it, but the ability to use things that happen in your life in the right way."

Davis said he's happy the team was able to use his story, and he's hopeful it will continue to have meaning for the players long after their basketball days are behind them.

"It's not just about basketball. It's about life as a whole," Davis said.

"And so the things that the players learned and they of course applied to basketball is hopefully something that will stay with them their whole lives."

Davis hasn't met Bennett or members of the UVA team, but he said he hopes to have that opportunity in the future.

The Sounds of the Mountains Music and Story Festival continues through Saturday night at Camp Bethel.
