Martinsville Fire providing grill safety tips

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Memorial Day weekend is upon us and many of you may be thinking about taking out the grill for the first time this year.

The Martinsville Fire Department is reminding you to be aware of where you use your grill.

Make sure it is away from anything combustible, including wooden porches.

Once you turn the gas on, be ready to light and use the grill immediately.

"If you grill doesn't not light within the first few seconds, shut the gas off step away from it, let it air out and then go back and restart the procedure. Sometimes the lines have to bleed but you don't want to build up that excess of gas," Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson said.

If you are using a charcoal grill, you may have to wait a day or even weeks before jumping the charcoal out.

The chief says crews have responded to many fires where the coal have caught on fire again.

So run some water over them just to be safe.
