Summer feeding programs available for students needing a meal

MONTGOMERY CO., Va. (WDBJ7) School is out in most hometowns but that doesn't mean their cafeterias are closed. Summer feeding programs for students begin next month.

In Montgomery County, Prices Fork Elementary School is opened to any school aged child within the county. Feeding America Southwest Virginia runs the program that gives students lunch throughout the summer.

"We really start to think about children who are losing access to those free and reduced school lunch and school breakfast programs, of course they're going to be out for summer and for some kids that's the only meal they get during the day," Amanda Allen with Feeding America Southwest Virginia said.

The agency typically holds more than 20 similar programs throughout the summer in Southwest Virginia. Some schools systems also host their own lunch program.

People can text No Kid Hungry to find a location near you. Just text ‘Food’ to 877-877 and receive a text back with the address of summer feeding sites closest to you.
