Suspects in N.C. homicide identified

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- Two suspects who were arrested in Grayson County in the apparent kidnapping and murder of a North Carolina woman have been identified.

According to a news release issued Friday, the Surry County, N.C., sheriff’s office was notified April 3 about a possible death in the Watershed / Pine Ridge Community, according to a news release. During the investigation, the Surry County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office ruled the investigation as a homicide. The sheriff’s office located the victim, Rebecca Carlene Plitt, 34, of Sparta, N.C., in a trunk of a vehicle that had been abandoned in a wooded area on Watershed Road, the release stated.

Plitt had been reported missing out of Alleghany County, N.C., and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office had been actively working to locate her. A joint investigation by Surry and Alleghany County deputies revealed that Plitt had been assaulted “in multiple jurisdictions during her captivity,” the release said.

Authorities located and arrested the following suspects: Kenneth Ray Dawson, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury with the intent to kill, concealment of a human body, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony conspiracy to commit murder. Dawson is currently being held in the New River Regional Jail without bond

Desire Nicole Billings, 24, of Sparta, N.C., has been charged with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury with the intent to kill, first degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Billings is currently being held in the New River Regional Jail without bond.

Dawson and Billings both were located and apprehended by Grayson County sheriff’s deputies, a news release stated.

Kimberly Shawn Bruner, 41, of Mount Airy, N.C., has been charged with second degree kidnapping, assault inflicting serious bodily injury, and felony larceny. Bruner is currently being held in the Surry County Detention Center under $100,000 secured bond.

Stephanie Rippey Wall, 37, of Mount Airy, N.C., has been charged with second degree kidnapping, obstruction of justice, assault inflicting serious bodily injury, and felony larceny. Wall is being held in the Surry County Detention Center under $110,000 secured bond.

Bradley Ray Hawks, 33, Lowgap, N.C. has been charged with second degree kidnapping and assault on a female. Hawks is currently in custody in the Surry County Detention Center under $25,000 secured bond.

Officials from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Airy (N.C.) Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and United States Marshals Service also aided in the investigation, the release stated.

This investigation is currently active, and no specific details related to the cause of death were released.
