In Roanoke, a Vietnam Veteran and retired Salem Police officer got the surprise of a lifetime.

It's all thanks to New Freedom Farm and the Roanoke Police Department.

Steve Goodwin is currently fighting lung cancer.

He's been helping out at New Freedom, a farm for suffering veterans, since its grand opening last October.

But Thursday night, they packed up the donkeys and miniature horses and came to him with some caroling!

Goodwin was humbled by the surprise.

"Then there were two cars, one Roanoke City and one Salem," Goodwin said. "And then JT got out of the car and I said 'alright, somebody's up to something here!' These are my people. My vets and New Freedom Farm... it means so much."

Goodwin says New Freedom Farm has been a great place to go during this tough time.
