Testimony begins in Soto-Bonilla capital murder trial in Bedford
Kevin Soto-Bonilla listened attentively, with the help of an interpreter, as law enforcement officers described the scene on Roaring Run Road in Goode March 27, 2017. That's the day prosecutors say Raymond Wood, a 17-year-old from Lynchburg, was murdered by Soto-Bonilla and others.
Sergeant Shannon Zimmerman of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office told jurors how Wood appeared after the murder.
"The body was partially clothed," Zimmerman testified. "It was missing a hand on its right arm. Had multiple gashes in its neck. Blood everywhere. There were clothes over to the side of it."
MS-13, a violent street gang, is known for its brutal knife attacks.
Thursday, prosecutors called a man to testify; he said he was previously affiliated with the gang. Television cameras were not allowed to capture the testimony.
The man talked about traveling from Maryland to Lynchburg with Soto-Bonillia and others to carry out a murder in March 2017, saying Soto-Bonilla laughed when the idea was discussed beforehand.
The former gang member's testimony took up most of the afternoon. Prosecutors are expected to continue calling witnesses Friday morning.
