The time has come for antenna TV viewers: Time to Rescan

By  |

Wednesday, September 11, 2019, WDBJ7 flipped the switch on a new transmitter. The change is part of what the FCC calls the "broadcast repack" and it involves the entire country. It impacts all viewers who use antennas to watch television.

The FCC’s goal of the “broadcast repack” is to make more bandwidth or "spectrum" available for wireless broadband and other uses. In order to make that happen, many TV stations, including WDBJ7, had to switch their frequencies. The rescan process is very simple and only takes a couple minutes. All TVs are different, but typically you just have to click menu on your remote and then find “search for channels.” After you run that search, WDBJ7, WZBJ24 and the other channels in your area will show up and you will be able to continue enjoying your favorite programs. If you are a cable or satellite customer, this change does not impact you.

In order to change frequencies, WDBJ7 installed a brand new transmitter. But that’s not the only technical improvement the station is making as part of this change. WDBJ7 is building a new broadcast tower and boosting our power. We are currently operating at 100kW using an auxiliary antenna on our new frequency. Once the new tower is complete, we will increase our power to 1,000kW (1 megawatt).

Construction on the new tower is on hold while we wait for a public hearing at the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors. After that meeting, we expect the board to approve the final permit for our permanent facilities. If everything goes according to plan, we hope to have the new tower installed by the end of the year.

The majority of our viewers receive WZBJ24 from the same antenna that broadcasts WDBJ7. A very small number of our viewers who live in the Lynchburg area receive WZBJ24 off of a low-power transmitter on Candler’s Mountain. That transmitter will be off the air for roughly 48 hours starting at 11:00PM Wednesday. When it returns to the air, those viewers will need to rescan their televisions. This only impacts viewers in the Lynchburg area who receive WZBJ24 but are unable to receive WDBJ7.

How do I rescan my TV?

To perform a rescan of your television receiver, use your remote control to access your TV's menu screen. You should be able to find a setting like: "Scan for channels," or "Channel search."

When you select that and press Enter, your TV will automatically search the airwaves and update your TV's channel listing. When this is complete, you will once again have access to WDBJ7 and WZBJ24.
For most TVs, performing a rescan includes these simple steps:

1. Use your remote to access the MENU system on your television.
2. While on the TV (or TUNER) input, select the ANTENNA setting (if applicable).
3. Find the option labeled "Scan for channels," "Channel search," or something similar, and select that with your remote.
4. Your TV will automatically search the airwaves for all available local channels.

Once this rescan is complete, you should be able to access {station & .2 programming} as usual.

My TV doesn’t have that, what should I do?

You may want to perform a Google search for your specific TV brand or refer to your TV's user manual for a step‐by‐step guide.

How soon will my channels reset?

It varies from TV to TV, but the rescan should take only a few minutes and your new channels should show up right away.
