Blacksburg reaches agreement for new public safety building, parking garage

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7)— Leaders on the Blacksburg Town Council are moving forward with plans to build a new public safety building and parking garage.

The police department has outgrown its current space and has been working with the council to build a new one. The project would also bring a separate parking structure that could hold more than 300 spots for the public and police.

Tuesday, the council voted to enter into a contract for a full design and saw some renderings of what the site could look like with WM Jordan.

The structures will be located on the former Blacksburg Middle School site that saw a blue fence go up a few weeks ago.

“Just as the community has grown, so has the police department and really the specialties that they do in modern policing is not how our old building is designed to,” said Deputy Town Manager Chris Lawrence. “The police are working hard to design a building that’s very open and transparent to the public. With policing today, that’s a real important thing that they work on.”

The design is estimated at $1.6 million and total construction at $25.6 million. The town plans to hold a community open house to get public feedback on the project soon.

The plan is to break ground this summer and open by fall 2021.
