ROCKBRIDGE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) A stretch of I-81 South has reopened after a wreck involving three tractor-trailers caused serious delays in Rockbridge County on Thursday morning.
The accident happened at mile marker 182, which is close to the Natural Bridge Route 11 exits. At one point, backups reached four miles.
Crews have now cleared the tractor-trailers and I-81 South is back open.
Around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a tractor-trailer driver rear-ended a second tractor-trailer, which hit a third.
A state trooper who was on scene tells WDBJ7 that the first driver was trapped inside. The fire department had to come and get him out. That driver was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital via helicopter, but the trooper says the driver is doing OK.
No one else was hurt.
The trooper is not sure yet what caused the crash, and he plans to talk to the first driver later Thursday morning.
