Two bridge closures causing headaches in Goode

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) In Bedford County, people are raising concerns now that two bridges are shut down in the same area.

V-DOT expects the bridge on Bellevue Road in Goode to stay closed for the rest of the year.

A backhoe fell off the bridge earlier this month, causing extensive damage.

The repairs on a nearby bridge on Goode road, have been planned for some time.

While VDOT is calling them necessary, one resident says it's simply an inconvenience.

Mike Lantrip lives 5 minutes away from the Goode Country Store on Prophet Road.

With the bridge replacement taking place on Goode Road, the trip now takes him about 25 minutes.

"I had to go all the way out to 460 and go out to Timber Ridge, take timber ridge down to Lowery road to get to 221," Lantrip says.

He also volunteers with the Goode Rescue Squad. According to him, responding to service calls now that the Bellevue Road and Goode Road bridges are closed, presents quite the challenge.

"It's made it almost impossible for people on the crew, especially if they live over where I do, to get to the crew hole," Lantrip says.

According to VDOT spokesperson Jason Bond, it's a reason why the bridges needed fixing.

"Both of these bridges were really not suitable for firetrucks or larger emergency vehicles because of their weight limits," according to Bond.

VDOT has been planning to replace the bridge on Goode Road for several years. They even held public meetings to make them aware of the detours that would be put in place.

Now that both bridges are out, Lantrip fears people may not get proper medical care in the event of an emergency.

Lantrip says "for Fire departments, anybody, there's only one way in and one way out."

The bridge on Goode Road is set to be completed in December. The one on Bellevue Road won't reopen until the end of this year or in early 2018.
