FBI investigating after two injured in machete attack on Appalachian trail

BLACKLICK, Va (WDBJ7) One man is in custody Saturday and two people were injured after an alleged machete attack on the Appalachian Trail. The alleged attack occurred on the AT in Wythe County.

Early Saturday morning, two hikers told the Bland County Sheriff's Office that a man with a machete was attacking people on the trail. One man and one woman were injured in the alleged assaults.

Deputies from the Wythe County Sheriff's Office then went to the AT and arrested one man.

Officials have closed the AT on the Smyth and Bland ends coming into Wythe county.

The case is currently under investigation by the Wythe County Sheriff's Office, Virginia State Police, the US Forest Service, and the FBI.
