The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is searching for the person who shot a mother and daughter in their own home Tuesday night.

Trudy Ann Goetz, 74, and her mother Doris T. Puleio, 92, were shot in their home off Bobwhite Rd. just after 11:40 p.m. Puleio died from her injuries. Goetz was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where she is being treated for two gunshot wounds.

Sheriff E.W. Viar said the investigators are searching for a suspect, but there is no known threat to the general public. He believes it is an isolated incident.

It is the first murder in Amherst County in 2019.

"This is very rare. These cases don't happen in Amherst County," said Viar. "These were good Christian people."

The sheriff's office will not be releasing any further information at this time. They said the office will release more details when it is, "appropriate and not detrimental to the ongoing investigation."

If anyone has any information they are asked to contact Investigator Oliver or Captain Elliot with the Amherst County Sheriff's Office by calling 434-946-9300.
