ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) U.S. Attorney John Fishwick is stepping down.
Fishwick was nominated by President Obama just over a year ago.
And with the election of Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, he is now leaving the post, effective at midnight on January 6th.
Fishwick says serving as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia has been the highest honor of his professional career.
"There are a number of challenges that exist in our communities, and in our world today," Fishwick told WDBJ7, "so when you have an opportunity to work with others to pursue those goals to keep our communities safe, I don't think there's a much higher calling than that."
First Assistant Rick Mountcastle will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney.
Fishwick intends to return to private practice, but says he will continue to look for ways to serve the community.
