LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The Marshals Service in the Western District of Virginia wants to warn you about a telephone scam.
They say they have received several reports of people getting a call from someone claiming to be with the United States Marshal Service.
It's coming mostly from the Bedford County and Lynchburg areas.
The caller tells the intended victim that they have missed jury duty and that they could be fined or arrested. They then leave a callback number. The idea is to mislead people into giving out financial information when they call back.
The Marshals Service wants to remind you it does not solicit payments from people over the phone.
If you ever have doubts, hang up or don't return the call.
You're asked to report any calls like this to police.
If you have any questions you can call Marshals Service in the Western District of Virginia at 540-857-2230, or visit www.usmarshals.gov .
