VDOT has decided to construct a new roundabout where Village Highway and Spring Mill Road meet in Concord.
The decision came after data showed the intersection next to Concord Elementary School- had a higher than normal crash rate.
A VDOT spokesperson says a new traffic circle would help slow traffic down and decrease the amount of crashes. “The likelihood or the severity of an injury or damage is much less than it would be as it currently stands as a free flowing intersection," said Paula Jones with the Lynchburg district.
The project will cost an estimated $3-million and should be completed by next fall.
VDOT says it plans to also put sidewalks in to improve safety for students and parents.
