CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A special tailgate was happening for the Virginia Tech swim and dive team Friday in Christiansburg.

The Pack the CAC tailgate saw dozens of fans out to support the team at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

That included legendary Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer, who was taking pictures and signing autographs.

It's an event meant to spread how great of an exercise swimming can be for people of all ages.

Aquatic Center volunteer Susan Bricken explained, "We live in an area where a lot of people have not grown up learning to swim, so it's a very necessary skill that they should acquire."

Beamer added about the event, "To be an athlete, to be able to compete, you're really very fortunate because not only do you get a great education from Virginia Tech but you learn some values that carry over into life of being successful."

Virginia Tech swam against Liberty University in the meet following the tailgate.
