A Vinton man is recovering from a gunshot wound deputies say he received during an attack on his ex-girlfriend and her father.

Jesse Carter was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery and several related weapons charges Wednesday, after being treated and released from a Roanoke hospital.

Deputies say Carter physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend and the woman's father at her home in Thaxton early Wednesday.

During the confrontation deputies say Carter took a handgun from his girlfriend's purse. The girlfriend was able to regain possession of her weapon and shoot Carter twice, deputies said. His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

According to a statement from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, Carter's girlfriend obtained a protective order against him two days ago. In addition to his other offenses, Carter is charged with violating the protective order.

Carter is being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center without bond.
