According to Virginia State Police, a 25-year-old female driver has been charged after a train hit her truck at the intersection of Wyndale Road and Kenwarn Lane in Abingdon Friday.

Police said the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck ran off the right side of the road and hit several mailboxes before crossing back over the road. The truck then ran off the left side of the roadway, went over an embankment, and came to a stop on the railroad tracks.

According to Virginia State Police, a neighbor heard the crash and came out to help the driver out of the truck. The neighbor used a flashlight to alert the engineer of an oncoming train about the truck sitting on the tracks. Police said the train was traveling 3 miles per hour at the time and did end up striking the truck. The train pushed the truck 150 feet before stopping.

Police said the driver was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Police charged the driver with failure to maintain control of her vehicle and for not wearing her seat belt.
