BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia Tech alerts are no longer limited to just students.

Parents, vendors and contractors, and visitors will now be able to sign up and receive them.

According to Michael Mulhare, the assistant vice president for VT Emergency Management, between 95 and 97 percent of students get VT alerts now.

"If we send a VT alert not only do we mean it, we really mean it, it's very important we want you to pay attention to that. Anytime we send an alert it'll have three pieces of information: what happened, where and what action we'd like you to take as a community," said Mulhare.

If you'd like to sign up for the alerts, it's as simple as texting "HokieFam" to 2-2-6-7-8-7
