BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia Tech is encouraging alumni and the community to give big during a new tradition for the university.
Giving Day started at noon Tuesday and ends Wednesday at noon. The 24 hour drive urges people to give to areas of the university that are meaningful for them.
Other donors are pledging to match and challenge gift opportunities.
"We're open 365 days a year for making gifts but on this particular day we're really focused on the message and the power of mobilizing the Hokie nation," said John Torget, the Assistant Vice President for Leadership Gifts and Annual Giving at Virginia Tech.
The university nearly doubled the amount it raised from 2015 to 2017, but leaders say the university trails its peers in several giving measures.
