BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) -- Senator Mark Warner and others gathered in Blacksburg Friday afternoon to receive a special delivery.
After ordering from an app, Warner received multiple packages containing items such as coffee, hand warmers and Advil via drone delivery.
It was part of a demonstration hosted by Virginia Tech, showcasing package delivery and traffic management drone technology developed by the drone company Wing.
"This is not a question of if it's going to happen," Warner said. "It's a question of when, and who's going to get the advantage of being, in a sense, the first in the nation, first in the world. And my hope would be, leveraging off of the great expertise we've got here at Virginia Tech, how can we make Virginia, Virginia Tech and this region a leader in this new industry."
After the demonstration, Warner led a roundtable discussion with local law-enforcement officials and first responders to address challenges related to widespread drone operation, as well as how companies developing and using this technology can contribute to public safety.
