Virginia Tech officially recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day
Virginia Tech has adopted a resolution to officially recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.
The day, which comes on the second Monday of October, is also commonly observed as Columbus Day.
A group known as "Native at Virginia Tech" collected more than 1,200 signatures to support this change last year.
The resolution also calls for the state to officially adopt this change as well.
"This, I think, is more than just symbolic," said Sam Cook, the university's director of American Indian studies. "This really marks an era of greater collaboration with our indigenous hosts."
The university calls the resolution an opportunity for education and engagement.
