ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia Western Community College is building a $15 million endowment. On Friday, the school celebrated a major step toward that goal.

College leaders dedicated the Maury and Sheila Strauss Family Student Life Center. And they recognized the Strauss family for a gift of $1 million.

Maury Strauss is the founder of Strauss Development Corporation.

He spoke with WDBJ7, following the ceremony.

"I hope it's an inspiration," he said, "for the present students and students coming along. Anything you can do to help young people, that's the future of the country."

The Strauss family gift launches the public phase of the school's endowment campaign, which has already raised more than $4 million.
