ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Governor Terry McAuliffe has declared that September is Virginia Spirits Month.

Local Roots Bartender Charles Howard says the restaurant is participating in Virginia Spirits Month.

According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, this year marks the second annual celebration with "new and exciting promotions intended to educate consumers and travelers about Virginia distilled spirits".

As part of the celebration, around 50 restaurants all across the state will be serving unique Virginia spirits cocktails throughout the month to highlight the local distillers.

Local Roots is one of a few restaurants in the Roanoke area participating.

A lot of these distilleries will source their grains, their corn, their mesh, from Virginia farmers, it helps with the agriculture," said Local Roots Bartender Charles Howard.

It's just a wonderful program anything we can do to highlight the wonderful products coming out of Virginia, I think it's great."

State leaders say the spirits industry has an important impact on Virginia's economy.
