Virginia's First Lady was in Danville Friday spreading her message of engagement.

It was all part of Averett University's Governor's Summit. Dorothy McAuliffe spoke to around 20 new Americorps volunteers and swore them into their year of service.

McAuliffe said Averett University has taken a leadership role in working to promote service with their students and throughout the higher education community.

"And finding those opportunities that enrich our communities but also help our young people develop skill sets and talents that they need to enter the work force and hopefully pubic service as well," McAuliffe said.

On Friday alone, 500 AmeriCorps volunteers are being sworn in across the Commonwealth.
