Voter registrar warns of registration scams ahead of president election

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Voting officials remind you to be careful when you're registering to vote for the first time.

You'll see them soon - those third party groups handing out these voter registration forms.

The forms ask for your name, birth date, social security number, and address.

That form is supposed to go to the voter registrar but the Montgomery County Registrar says it could be a scam.

"That's a big problem because if some people, if they really wanted to get crooked, they could sit there and act as if they're going to turn those registrations into us and just take them and just start setting up credit card accounts and everything else out there," said Randy Wertz, the Montgomery County Voter Registrar.

He says the safest way to register to vote is in person at the voter registration office, or on the Virginia Department of Elections website.

The deadline to register to vote is October 17th.
