WDBJ7 to temporarily go off air overnight for maintenance
Beginning 12:35 the morning of Saturday, December 7, the engineers at WDBJ7 will be temporarily shutting off power to most of our station, which means we will be off air.
This power outage is being conducted in order to install a new UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for our station. UPS systems are an emergency power source, so they act as a type of "battery" to carry the station's electrical load until a generator kicks in.
Replacing our existing UPS is the single biggest step we have taken to reduce our station's energy usage. The new UPS will be 99 percent efficient, whereas the old one was 83 percent efficient.
The station plans to announce the outage over air before it begins. We expect the power to be out for several hours while the work is being done; however, the goal is to have everything up and running in time for the 6 a.m. news broadcast.
Our hope is that the outage's time frame will minimize the impact it has on viewers, but we apologize for any inconvenience.
