Warming shelter open in Danville

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A warming shelter is open in Danville for anyone affected by power outages.

Many of the power outages are in the territory covered by Danville Utilities.

If you are in need of this service, the shelter is open December 9, 2017 at 5:00 a.m.

It's located at North Main Baptist Church 2818 N. Main Street 434.836.4892.

No meals or showers will be provided.

Before leaving home, officials say you should:
•Turn off lights and appliances (except refrigerators and freezers).
•Close and lock windows and doors.
•Offer rides to neighbors who may not have transportation.
Residents who come to the shelter should bring only essential items, including:
•Medical supplies (prescriptions, other medications, first aid kit)
•Baby care items (formula, diapers, and favorite toys)
•Blankets, sleeping bags and pillows
•Non-perishable food
•Bottled water
•Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled
•Chargers for any electronic devices you bring with you
•Books, games and other ways to entertain your family and yourself

Only trained service animals are allowed inside the shelter.

This emergency warming shelter will stay open as long as needed.
