What, who investigators could be checking after Roanoke County stabbing incident

RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) There are still many unanswered questions about who Wasil Farooqui is and his possible ties.

His lawyer told us late Tuesday evening Farooqui has no ties or affiliations with ISIS or any other terrorist organizations. Still some have their doubts.

Local and federal investigators, including the FBI, are working to find the answers.

Tod Burke, a former Maryland Police Officer and Radford University professor, says investigators will look at social networking that is part of a deep and wide ranging investigation to find out if this person acted alone or with help.

Investigators will look into who this person associated with.

He says not to be alarmed by the incident, but rather be aware and share any information.

"It's not uncommon for the State Police, FBI, and other jurisdictions to be involved in this type of investigation. So I don't think there is a need to panic. What there needs to be is cooperation with the citizens, with the police agencies, and any information that can be shared needs to be shared," Burke said.

He says this situation doesn't surprise him.

What seems like a lone character working on their own could happen anywhere, this time it happened in Roanoke.

Burke says right now is crucial for investigators as they work to see if that is truly the case.

Did he work alone, are there external ties or is it domestic, or terrorism related at all?

Those are questions Burke says investigators are working to answer.

"Let's assume that it is domestic terrorism what the police will do, they'll investigate not only this individual, but the individuals friends, they're going to look at social networking, and do a full fledged investigation to find out if this is truly a lone person or was there some assistance," Burke said.

Burke says right now is the time for cooperation between people who may have know this man, or saw something and police.

He says it's important for people to know their surroundings, their neighbors, and report any suspicious activity.
