Why these water heaters are being recalled

By  |

(WKYT) The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling more than 616,000 water heaters because of a fire hazard.

The A.O. Smith Ultra-Low NOx water heater's gas burner screen can tear, creating excess heat, according to the commission.

The concern is some water heaters may be installed directly on a combustible floor and could cause a fire.

This has happened six times, according to the recall notice.

The A.O. Smith water heaters were sold between April 2011 and December 2016 under several brand names, including Whirlpool and Kenmore.

The first four digits of the serial numbers for the recalled water heaters are between 1115 and 1631.
