Wythe County program takes 'paws-on' approach to reading

RURAL RETREAT, Va. (WDBJ) -- Students in Wythe County are getting excited about reading with the help of a furry friend!

Bill Marshall and his greyhound, Coinneach, run a program called S.H.A.R.E., or Sending Home Awesome Reading Experiences.

Marshall reads the book he wrote about Coinneach and each student gets his or her own copy to take home!

"It's about Coinneach, and they've met Coinneach, and they've probably got Coinneach's hair on them right now," Marshall said. "It's exciting to see the subject of the book come to life that way and when they take that book home, they want to show it to people."

Marshall says he hopes the program inspires the students to keep reading on their own.
