WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Parking fines may increase in Wytheville. Town council considered raising the fees Monday night for the first time in five years.
Drivers who park illegally in the town of Wytheville should be prepared to shell out a little extra.
"We have some areas where there are renewed violations and it just seemed like a reasonable time to increase some fees," said Wayne Sutherland, the town manager for Wytheville.
Parking fines could increase immediately if town council approves the changes. The police department suggested the new fines that may now be anywhere from $5 up to $15.
"And some of these kind of make sense. I mean currently to park illegally on the sidewalk is a fee of 35 dollars and it will go to 50 dollars," Sutherland said.
The new fees for about 20 different types of parking violations come as the town installs new sidewalks and improves its downtown.
The town manager says it's meant not to increase revenue, just to enforce laws.
I really don't know how much money this will generate, but not a lot. It's more of a deterrent to get people's attentions," Sutherland said.
Some proposed fees now inch closer to those in larger Southwest Virginia towns where some parking ticket fees are much more.
Wayne Sutherland: "I would say if you went to Christiansburg, Roanoke, or Blacksburg these fees are just nominal," Sutherland said.
