SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) -- Salem and Jefferson Forest, it's November, it's playoffs, win or go home all that jazz. Spartans going for four straight state titles, Cavs trying to play spoiler.
First quarter we're scoreless, Dr. Jack Gladden dialing up Chase Ferris for a house call, touchdown Spartans and it's 7-0 after one possession.
But Coach Mags knows it's going to be a long game and he was right.
Next drive it's Nathan Pribble for the one yard QB sneak and now we're all tied up at 7.
Defense the main concern for JF and they did not show up in the first half. This is the fullback Bobby Pinello and the Italian stallion is in for six, it's now 14-7 Spartans in the first quarter.
They weren't done, Gladden again passing and again he finds his dude Ferris for the 11-yard score and the men in Maroon are on top by two scores 21-7.
Fans are digging it, but like I said it was a long game. Pribble passing, he doesn't do it a lot but he made it count this game this is Danteas Braxton for the tudder, Cavs are right back in it.
After another Salem score it's 27-14 thanks to a blocked extra point. You know what my favorite Gym Class Heroes song is? Cupit's Chokehold. Keenan Cupit for 70 yards, arm tackles won't cut it he's gone. Cavs go into the half down just six.
Third quarter, Cupit gets the rock again from a couple yards out and that's a score. From down 21-7 the Cavs take the lead 28-27.
After a huge defensive stop the cavs get the ball back, Pribble rolling out looking to pass and it's complete to who else but Danteas Toni Braxton, and he tells Coach Christmas to Breathe Again.
It's 35-27 Jefferson Forest.
Spartans need a score in the worst way, fourth quarter down by 8, give the ball to your bell cow and let him make a play. Isaiah Persinger finds a lane and that's a touchdown. Spartans need the two point conversion to tie.
Here's Gladden throwing to Avery Close for the tie.. it's incomplete. There will be no four-peat. Jefferson Forest comes into Salem and knocks off the Spartans 35-33.
Coach Christmas and his team are moving on to round number two.
"Well I think it's a great win for us. They run a great program and got a great program so this is a big win for us," Jefferson Forrest Head Coach, Bob Christmas said.
"It feels great, it feels great to keep playing with my boys you know being a senior and winning in the first round it feels good. We have to go into the second round with the same energy," said Marvin Blake, Jefferson Forest running back.
"Ya we knew if we won this first round we would see them again in the second round and we're going to play hard against them again," Keenan Cupit, Jefferson Forest running back, said.
Well guys you heard it right there the Cavaliers ready for another date with EC Glass this time in the second round of the playoffs.
A great game from them tonight 35-33 the final score, and shout out to the Cavalier defense only six points allowed in the second half after giving up 27 in the first half.
