ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) -- In a rematch of last year’s region finals, Appomattox came to Salem Stadium, its “home away from home,” and they felt right at home on Friday night.
On the first drive for the Raiders, freshman quarterback Tre Lawing tossed a floater to Collen Shaw for a big gain in to Glenvar territory. Later, Shaw scored on a handoff to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.
Glenvar, however, tied it at 7, Colby Street scored on fourth and goal from the 1-yard-line to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter.
Lawing would answer for Appomattox just before the half, however, recovering from an apparent injury early in the drive to score and give Appomattox a 14-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Street led the charge for Glenvar, breaking a long run for a first down to the Raiders’ 15, then scoring shortly afterward to tie the game at 14.
But just two plays later, Lawing fired deep to Tez Booker, who turned a fingertip catch into a 51-yard score to put the Raiders back on top. In the fourth quarter, a field goal by Nick Fariss gave Appomattox a 24-14, lead.
Late in the game, the Raider defense held off a drive to stop Glenvar short for a turnover on downs.
Glenvar would add a late touchdown, but the Raiders are going to the region finals with a 24-21 win.
